 The results are in and there were a few surprises. Network Marketing Business Journal (NMBJ) conducted a recent industry-wide survey with a few objectives. We wanted to know how informed distributors were and how much they understood the industry. We wanted to get a current pulse on how the industry was doing and what the field thought about how the industry was doing. We also wanted to obtain current statistics about the demographics of the industry.

The responses numbered in the hundreds. However, it is difficult to determine if we can claim that the survey was scientifically significant. If we had paid an expensive marketing company to conduct the survey, they would probably have claimed that it was.

 It is nothing new for direct sales and network marketing companies to receive negative press, which often demonstrates a negative bias against direct sales or an influence by one of the media’s larger advertisers from a competing industry to the direct sales industry. Government authorities that may be interested in personal career gains have also found our industry is an easy target. Several of our larger public companies have fallen victim to class action suits by unscrupulous law firms who also find the direct sales industry to be vulnerable.

 Statistically, the average distributor in a direct sales company utilizing a party plan marketing method earns more than the average distributor in a direct sales company utilizing a network marketing or multi-level (MLM) compensation plan. This is because the party plan method of marketing results in a high level of retailing. Party plan companies also pay a higher rate of retail profit. Therefore, new party plan distributors earn a good income quicker than new network marketing or MLM distributors. Since the number of new or beginning distributors always far outnumbers experienced or top distributors, the average income is driven up in the party plan company.
